About Us

THE NATIONAL FORUM
ON SPIRITUALITY AND AGING (NAFOSA)
is an ecumenical / interfaith coalition of traditions, organizations, and individuals who believe that people of faith need to challenge the ageism that is prevalent in the world and our own thinking. We believe that God is actively involved in our lives from beginning to end *(and beyond).Capturesage

NAFOSA is coordinated by Rev. Brian McCaffrey, NAFOSA Chair, and Dr. Tom DeLoughry, NAFOSA’S Associate Director.

Those in NAFOSA propose that our Faith Communities need to re-examine our present perspective regarding Older Adult Ministry, which is generally based upon a bio-medical model of decline and loss adopting instead an integrated and holistic body, mind, and spirit model. Life, no matter the age involves struggles, loss and grief, but also hope, forgiveness, grace, service, faith, and love. Those who have lived a long life have gained experience as well as a broader perspective. Shalom is the end goal; the world and all generations are blessed when those in late life after all of its grief and sufferings are able to say, “Through it all God has been good.”

Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all the remnant of the house of Israel,
who have been borne by me from your birth,
carried from the womb;
even to your old age I am he,
even when you turn gray I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
I will carry and will save. (Isaiah 46:3-4)

AS MEMBERS OF NAFOSA OUR HOPE AND EXPECTATION IS THAT WE SHALL:
– Be respectful in all communications and postings
– Confront ageism in our culture and churches;
– Develop a wholistic vision of ministy to, with, by, and for
those in the second half of life;
– Promote intentional intergenerational programming;
– Support the inner journey;
– Strengthen the outer service.”
